Down On The Bayou

about

New Orleans has always felt like a warm glove of a home since residing there in my early 20s. I left the city a month before Katrina hit in 2005 and watched the aftermath from afar as the city struggled to bounce back from such devastation. She did, but in a much different form than from when I lived there. Fast forward to 2021, and a mid pandemic visit, the city still felt like home, but there were similarities in feel to post Katrina days with closures, cancellations, and no visitors due to COVID. It was strange to witness New Orleans, of all places, without any music, it almost felt like the city was sleeping. I know she'll come back around, but the streets were quiet, eerie, lonely, and not in the magic ways New Orleans always seems to offer.

lyrics

Down on the bayou
A lonely trumpet sings
-
-

Broken glass needs fixing
Downtown, New Orleans she’s bleeding
Whoa oh
Whoa oh

Bourbon Street is empty
No music just despair
Is this virus a vaccine
Floating through the air

Preservation Hall’s boarded up
Feels like the levees’ve been overcome
I miss the late night revelry
When the ghosts made sure I got home safely

Whoa oh
Whoa oh
Whoa oh
Whoa oh

There’s a flood of memory
Hiding in these magnolia trees
A parade of broken hearts
Dancing & singing down St Charles
It’s taking time and days away
To make me feel like I should’ve never left yesterday

Down on the bayou
All the drumming has stopped
Near Armstrong Park
This voodoo makes me feel afraid of the dark

Whoa oh
Whoa oh
Whoa oh
Whoa oh

Gonna get me a shotgun
Gotta get me a shotgun
Gonna get me a shotgun
And shoot whole through the dark
